Protector of cats, fever sufferers, gardeners and pilgrims.
Saint Gertrude led a brief and holy life, dying at the age of 33. (The same age that Jesus died.) Known for her hospitality to travellers, she is most remembered for her devotion to souls in purgatory and the recently dead. These souls were represented by mice, so she is often pictured with mice. It is believed that this is how she became associated with cats.
Instead of mice, our figure shows her surrounded by her feline friends.
Prayer to Assist with Feline Care
Most holy St. Gertrude, I beseech thee to provide me with the strength and dedication to care for every stray cat that finds its way to my doorstep. I also ask that you protect my furniture from claw marks and my carpet from "accidents." Amen |
